Discernment Matters: Not Every Leader Is From God

This documentary shook me to my core. The way some “pastors” and church leaders can get away with horrific things makes me incredibly angry. The abuse, manipulation, and harm caused by false leaders needs to stop.

Death of a Pastor’s Wife is a powerful Netflix docuseries that examines the disturbing story surrounding Pastor John-Paul “JP” Miller, his church, and the people caught in the middle. Without giving too much away, it sheds heartbreaking light on Mica Miller and the emotional, sexual, spiritual, financial, and physical abuse and alleged coercive control she experienced while trying to leave her marriage.

Mica’s death was officially ruled a suicide, but the circumstances have continued to raise questions among her family, friends, and many who followed her story. The documentary left me questioning whether we truly know the full picture and how prolonged abuse and coercive control may have contributed to what happened. It’s heartbreaking and a reminder of how dangerous abuse can become when hidden behind religious authority.

What disturbed me most was how many warning signs seemed to go unnoticed—or were possibly ignored. People continued to blindly follow, defend, and excuse behavior that should have been confronted. Grace and forgiveness are not a free pass from ACCOUNTABILITY.

Churches can unfortunately become the perfect environment for narcissistic and manipulative people to gain power because religious titles can give them credibility and authority. Being an influential church leader does not automatically mean God approves of you, and “God can use anyone” should never become an excuse for horrific behavior.

I grew up a church girl, and church hurt and religious trauma are very real to me. I’ve experienced mean girls in church, cheating narcissists, manipulative leaders, and more. My mother always taught me that the altar was a holy place, and I’ve always respected it. I’ve learned that standing behind a pulpit, preaching the Word, playing music, leading worship, or directing a ministry does not automatically make someone a man or woman of God.

There was a point in my life when the actions of an evil person within a “church” brought me to a place where I was ready to take my own life, just like Mica did. But God saved me. He carried me through that darkness and healed me mentally, emotionally, physically, and in every way I needed.

Thankfully, when I finally spoke up to church leadership, I was protected and the person responsible was held accountable. I will forever be grateful to the pastors who protected me. It meant so much and helped redeem the times in the past when I felt unheard and unprotected in other churches.

Many years, I also dated a very well-known Christian reggaeton artist who had traveled around the world singing in churches and was highly respected within the Christian community. Behind the scenes, however, he was sleeping with multiple women.

A week before I discovered the truth, someone close to him —who genuinely cared about me and whom I later worked with—told me she respected me too much to let me get hurt and warned me that he was cheating.

That same week, he visited me. I confronted him, but he denied everything. After he left, he accidentally left his voice recorder at my house. He called asking me to hold onto it and specifically told me not to listen to it. Well… tell a girl not to do something and she’s probably going to do it.

Inside was a voice note from a woman who had gifted him the recorder. She professed her love for him and described their intimacy, including how she had given him her virginity.

What made it even more heartbreaking was that she and I were MySpace friends. We used to communicate often. I never told her that he and I were together because I didn’t want to hurt her with the truth. Part of me wanted to protect her, so I even made up stories about liking someone else.

He was so afraid I would tell her the truth that he manipulated her into believing I was obsessed with him and had made everything up. He convinced her to cut communication with me.

Meanwhile, he continued living the same lifestyle while manipulating other people and making me look crazy—as if I had invented everything. Not long after, he married someone else.

Looking back, I truly believe I dodged a bullet. I pray and hope he changed and is now a man of God who honors and respects his wife, because he is still active and known as a Christian artist. I also sometimes think about the woman he hurt and hope she is happy and doing well.

Sadly, he wasn’t the only Christian artist I knew who lived this way. I knew several Christian men who publicly preached and worshipped one thing while privately cheating on their wives—and some were even sleeping with prostitutes.

Those experiences taught me something I will never forget:

A platform, microphone, church, or the title of “Christian artist” does not automatically make someone a person of integrity.

Because of my experiences, I’m no longer interested in dating someone simply because he goes to church or identifies as a Christian.

I want to see who you are outside of religion—your character, integrity, morals, values, accountability, and how you treat people when there’s no Bible verse, church title, or religious platform to hide behind.

Going to church doesn’t automatically make someone a good person. Knowing Scripture doesn’t mean you practice what you preach. And calling yourself a “man of God” means very little to me if your private behavior contradicts everything you claim to believe.

I’m interested in character, not a religious label.

These experiences taught me that God is real—but people are not God. Never confuse a church leader with God Himself. Question what doesn’t feel right. Use discernment. Don’t blindly follow anyone simply because they hold a title, stand behind a pulpit, lead worship, or claim to speak for God.

And to those who use God’s name to manipulate, abuse, or hurt others: you cannot hide forever. There will come a day when actions are brought into the light and accountability comes.

I believe Mica’s story has already started conversations that will shake churches and force people to take spiritual abuse, coercive control, and leadership accountability more seriously.

Church should never be a place where people are silenced, manipulated, or abused. It should be a place where people can find truth, healing, community, and God.

I pray there is justice for Mica and accountability for everyone who played a role in the circumstances surrounding her death. I personally believe there is much more to her story and struggle than a simple suicide ruling.
