My grandmother was laid to rest in Puerto Rico on June 9th. Although she spent most of her life in New York, her heart belonged to Puerto Rico, particularly to Ciales, the town where she was born and raised, nestled in the tropical mountains of the island.
During my visit last visit to Puerto Rico I explored Ciales to uncover the essence of her childhood. My journey was filled with breathtaking scenery, as lush mountains framed the horizon and valleys unfolded like a vibrant tapestry. The long road led me to Paseo Lineal Juan Antonio Corretjer, a scenic overlook that showcased the beauty of Ciales, a spot known for various famous food trucks that offer a variety of delightful culinary treats. I enjoyed crispy alcapurrias and refreshing piña coladas that tasted delicious, each bite transporting me closer to the memories of my grandmother. I’m a lover of all gastronomy but nothing delights my belly and soul like traditional Puerto Rican cuisine.

Admiring this serene area, I had a profound connection with grandma. Viewing the majestic mountains and even a tranquil lake, I couldn’t help but wonder if this was the very spot where she washed clothes in her youth. I could almost visualize her there, and I recalled her amusing stories of being courted by suitors, wondering over where those encounters might have taken place.

Even though my grandmother was no longer physically present, her presence felt alive all around me. The vibrant landscapes and beauty of Ciales served as reminders of her legacy, bringing me closer to her than I ever anticipated.
This journey transcended more than a mere visit; it became a heartfelt homage to the woman who shaped my family’s history. Ciales has etched itself permanently in my heart, standing as a testament to the love and memories shared across generations. Reflecting on this experience leaves me with countless unanswered questions and a deep yearning to discover more about my grandmother’s life and her past.
