Thanksgiving is a time when we gather with loved ones, eat delicious food, and express gratitude for the blessings in our lives. However, it is important to remember that gratitude should not be limited to just one day. In a world filled with struggles and hardships, it is crucial to cultivate a grateful mindset every day. Today I had an encounter that reminded me of the importance of gratitude, not just during Thanksgiving, but throughout the year.
This Thanksgiving morning, as I went about my errands before joining friends for dinner, an encounter left a lasting impact on me. I stopped by a store to exchange some items, and as I stepped out of the car, I noticed a young woman outside, holding a baby girl. She approached me, offering some gum she was selling. In that moment, my heart sank as I realized the harsh reality this young immigrant woman was facing on a day meant for celebration and togetherness.
The sight of this young woman, braving the cold weather with her baby, trying to make ends meet, shattered my heart. Thanksgiving should be a time spent with family and friends, not a day where survival becomes the priority. Overwhelmed with empathy, I decided to help in any way I could. I handed her all the cash I had in my purse, insisting she keep the gum, and wished her a Happy Thanksgiving. The shock on her face mirrored the shock I felt within myself.
As I sat back in my car, tears streaming down my face, I realized that this encounter was not a mere coincidence. It was a reminder from God to appreciate and be grateful for everything I had. In that moment, I was reminded of the countless blessings in my life that I often took for granted. The warmth of a loving family, the comfort of a home, and the privilege of celebrating Thanksgiving with dear ones were all things I had overlooked.
Thanksgiving serves as a beautiful reminder to express gratitude. It is about acknowledging the blessings we have, big or small, and appreciating them with a grateful heart. This encounter taught me that gratitude is not just about saying “thank you” but also about taking action and extending kindness to those in need. Let us strive to cultivate a grateful mindset every day, not just on Thanksgiving, and make a positive difference in the lives of others.
